Description
Juan Gris’s Still Life Before an Open Window, Place Ravignan brings a tabletop arrangement into conversation with the city beyond it. A bottle, glass, fruit, and newspaper are broken into angular planes, while the open window reveals blue-toned buildings and foliage. Curving balcony ironwork links the interior objects with the exterior view.
Painted in 1915, the work uses contrasting colors and shifting viewpoints to build a carefully organized space. Familiar objects remain legible within the layered geometry, but their edges also connect to the light and architecture around them. Gris makes the still life feel both constructed and open to the world outside.
