Description
Several animal combat groups occupy Eugène Delacroix’s ink study sheet, with dark wash strengthening some forms and a separate head near the upper left. A rearing horse attacked by a lion and a lion struggling with a serpent give the page opposing bodily relationships. The subjects make the drawing a place to investigate force through more than one encounter.
Made in the 1830s, the drawing uses pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash on writing paper. The materials give the studies a common tonal and linear presence while preserving their separate subjects. Delacroix’s sheet offers an intimate encounter with dramatic invention, where animal forms become material for investigating movement and resistance. Its appeal lies in the comparison between struggles, making each encounter part of a broader attention to living force.
