Description
In Study for a Pietà, from the school of Rembrandt, loose ink marks bring three figures into relationship. A standing presence at the left faces the central leaning figure and Christ’s body lower at the right. The open cream field gives the gathering its own concentrated space, allowing a sacred subject of mourning to take shape through particular neighboring bodies.
Drawn in pen and brown ink, the seventeenth-century sheet is associated with Rembrandt’s school rather than securely attributed to his hand. The work’s interest lies in its character as a study, where the movement of drawn marks can preserve the immediacy of inquiry. A theme of considerable emotional weight is approached through a modest sheet, allowing artistic exploration and remembered sorrow to coexist.
