Description

In this Death of Major Peirson study, John Singleton Copley explores figures supporting and leaning against one another on light blue paper. A larger group occupies the upper center, with smaller and fainter studies elsewhere on the sheet. Fine lines test posture, balance and the interaction between bodies. Made in 1782–83 in black chalk on light blue paper, the sheet examines how dying French officers could convey the consequences of conflict within the larger historical painting.

The study does not attempt to reproduce the entire event. Instead, it concentrates the viewer’s attention on bodies whose loss of strength changes their positions and dependence on one another. The drawing’s limited material allows contour and darker accents to carry the scene without a fully developed surrounding setting. As a preparatory work, it preserves the practical examination behind a dramatic history painting, where emotional impact depends on the convincing arrangement of human forms.
