Description
Sudarium Held by Two Angels by Albrecht Dürer centers on a sacred cloth bearing the face of Christ. Two kneeling angels present the fabric between them, their large wings forming an elegant frame around the image. The cloth’s folds move across the foreground, giving the solemn presentation a gentle rhythm rather than a rigid symmetry.
Created in 1513, the engraving finds its force in the balance between the angels’ attentive poses and the direct gaze on the veil. Fine lines distinguish soft fabric from feathered wings, while deep shaded passages give the small scene remarkable depth. The image turns an act of display into an intimate devotional encounter, with every fold and gesture returning attention to the face at its center.
