Description
In Paris in 1887, Vincent van Gogh painted a remarkable group of still lifes devoted to cut sunflower heads. In this Sunflowers, the flowers rest across the canvas, their curling petals and seed heads becoming a study in lively form, warm color, and bold brushwork. It is a different composition from the later sunflower bouquets in vases that Van Gogh painted in Arles.
The Van Gogh Sunflowers print is one of four Paris sunflower still lifes. Paul Gauguin acquired two of the smaller paintings and displayed them above his bed in Paris. The story adds a personal connection to an image whose flowers feel both fleeting and full of energy.
