Description
Peter Paul Rubens’s Susanna turns a solitary female figure into a concentrated pen-and-wash drawing. Her body faces forward while the head turns back above the shoulder, bringing different directions into the pose. Cloth crosses the hips, and broad gray-brown washes gather behind her, with a suggestion of garden space at the right. The biblical subject’s vulnerability is expressed through the figure rather than a crowded narrative setting.
Rubens’s drawing invites the viewer to follow how an image is built from decisions about contour, emphasis and the placement of shadow. The pale paper remains part of that process, leaving the marks visibly active rather than concealing them beneath a finished surface. Susanna becomes both a named figure and a concentrated study of human expression.
