Description
Nakamura Nakazō portrays a Buddhist pilgrim in pale flowing robes with a staff, headwear and a small hanging object. The spare background lets the carried forms and costume establish the figure’s distinctive appearance. Katsukawa Shunshō keeps the named actor within this portrayal, joining the performer to a traveling religious identity without turning the encounter into an invented journey.
Dating to around 1780, the color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It gives the portrayed pilgrim a continuing visual presence beyond the stage event, where the meeting of performer and assumed identity can be considered closely. The work’s interest lies in that relationship without requiring a speculative destination, journey or dramatic episode to explain the figure’s appearance.
