Description
Katsukawa Shunshō presents Sawamura Sōjūrō III as a standing traveler wearing straw headgear and a cloak. The costume supplies the outward identity of the Kumano pilgrim Jissaku, while the role conceals Taira no Shigemori. A quiet standing figure thus carries several layers of recognition: the named actor, the pilgrim he performs and the person hidden behind that pilgrim disguise.
Dated to the eleventh month of 1785, the print is the left sheet of a three-part composition. Its place within a triptych matters: this panel represents one portion of a larger stage arrangement, rather than necessarily the whole dramatic encounter. Printed in ink and color on paper, it preserves Kabuki’s interest in appearance and revelation, inviting attention to how a role can carry more than one identity at once.
