Description

The Agony in the Garden places Christ in prayer amid a rugged gathering of rock, trees and foliage. His companions sleep below him while an angel appears with a chalice above, and armed figures approach in the distance. The landscape separates these different states of awareness, giving the kneeling figure a secluded space even as danger draws near.

Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut makes the contrast between vigilance and exhaustion visible through hands, heads and folded bodies. The sleeping disciples settle into the foreground, while Christ’s raised gesture answers the apparition above. Closely observed plants and uneven stone give the spiritual drama a tangible setting, making the episode feel both remote and intensely human.
