Description
The Betrayal of Christ by Albrecht Dürer shows a crowd pressing around Christ as Judas approaches him, turning a moment of apparent closeness into the signal for arrest. Raised weapons, overlapping bodies and urgent gestures fill the scene, while a struggle near the foreground adds another sharp burst of action. The Betrayal of Christ presents the Passion’s turning point as an encounter in which intimacy and violence are inseparable.
From The Small Passion, the woodcut compresses a complex narrative into a tightly organized vertical space. Christ remains the focus amid the surrounding movement, and the dark contours make each hand, face and weapon part of a restless pattern. The small scale heightens the pressure of the gathering. Rather than allowing the event to unfold at a comfortable distance, the composition draws the viewer close to its confusion and moral tension.
