Description
In The Box with the Gilded Mask, a red theater curtain hangs above a dark-clothed spectator leaning within a box, with an ornate golden railing crossing diagonally below. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec makes the enclosure part of the encounter in The Box with the Gilded Mask. The colored architectural accents frame the figure closely, turning a place of spectatorship into a scene that itself invites observation.
The 1894 lithograph uses crayon, brush, spatter and scraping in five colors on imitation Japan paper. Its varied marks lend the setting texture without weakening the strong diagonal of the rail. Curtain, ornament and dark clothing give the spectator different kinds of enclosure, making the theater box both a place to watch from and an intimate space to look into.
