Description
A hillside tower rises between framing trees in Castle above the Meadows, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Charles Turner. Cows occupy the nearer pasture beneath the elevated building. The finished sepia tones connect their modest presence to the distant architecture, giving the working proof a landscape character as well as a place in the plate’s development.
Dated 1808, this etching and mezzotint is an engraver’s proof from before the first published state of the Liber Studiorum plate. That working distinction belongs to the source impression rather than another landscape subject. The image offers an encounter with a design taking printed form, allowing the scene’s structure and tonal presence to be considered together. Its interest lies in the meeting of different scales, where a small sheet can hold both a historical building and the wider land around it.
