Description
The Celestial Globe—Southern Hemisphere transforms a map of the heavens into a circular gathering of animals and human figures. Rays divide the field from a central point, while labeled constellations occupy their places around the sphere. Heraldic shields and curling bands of text surround the diagram, making the sheet an engaging meeting of scientific order and imaginative form.
In this 1515 woodcut, Albrecht Dürer gives the southern sky a visual language that is both precise and richly pictorial. The figures help make abstract positions memorable, while the ruled framework holds them in a shared arrangement. The result invites two kinds of looking at once: following the measured geometry of a chart and enjoying the creatures and stories carried by the stars.
