Description
The Circumcision gathers a crowded assembly around the infant Christ in an imposing interior. Attendants lean inward toward the child, while columns and arches rise above the closely set heads. The adults’ hands create a focused point within the group, making the small body at the center the subject of a formal and carefully attended ceremony.
In this woodcut from The Life of the Virgin, Albrecht Dürer contrasts the scale of the architecture with the vulnerability of the infant. Robes, headwear and differing postures give the gathering a lively variety, while the enclosed space keeps its attention concentrated. The result is a ceremonial scene that remains grounded in human closeness, with the larger setting giving weight to a delicate central action.
