Description
In The Coiffure, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gathers two women in a lightly stated interior, with the nearer figure seated at the left. Orange hair provides a warm point of attention, while a standing companion appears behind and toward the right. The pale ground keeps the relationship clear, allowing a private act of grooming to organize the image without an elaborate surrounding room.
Dated 1893, the crayon and brush lithograph was printed in three colors on imitation Japan paper. Edouard Kleinmann published it, Eugène Verneau printed it, and the Théâtre Libre also belongs to the publishing record. Those separate roles distinguish the design artist from the people and institution that brought the sheet into circulation. The work joins a private visual subject with a public printed format, giving the playbill interest beyond its immediate practical purpose.
