Description
Vincent van Gogh’s The Courtyard of the Hospital in Arles looks down into a garden enclosed by bright arcaded buildings. Curved paths divide patterned flowerbeds around a small pool, while dark tree trunks frame the foreground. Yellow walls, green planting, and blue shadows create a vivid setting within the sheltered square.
Painted in 1889, the view records the hospital where Van Gogh had received treatment. The elevated viewpoint allows him to organize the garden as a network of paths, beds, and enclosing galleries. Small figures appear beneath the arches, but color and the rhythm of the planting give the courtyard its distinctive, animated character.
