Description
Christ hangs above a gathering of mourners and armed men in The Crucifixion. The Virgin is supported at one side, while a woman kneels near the base of the cross. The upright timber divides the crowded scene, and bowed heads and lifted faces direct attention toward the body above them.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Small Passion compresses a broad biblical episode into a closely gathered scene. A skull on the ground and the dark surrounding space reinforce its gravity, while the different gestures distinguish grief from watchful attendance. The contrasting responses give the composition its human variety, making the central suffering visible through the people assembled beneath it.
