Description
This round Crucifixion, a copy after Albrecht Dürer, gathers Christ and the mourners within a compact circular frame. The cross rises at the center, while the surrounding figures turn toward the body above them. Halos, robes and closely spaced gestures give the small composition an intimate devotional character, with little empty space between its principal forms.
The engraving’s curved boundary brings the group together as a unified scene. Strong lines separate the upright cross from the softer rhythms of cloth and body, while shaded passages give the figures a sense of depth. The copied design preserves the direct appeal of a closely gathered sacred image, inviting attention to the relationships among the people rather than to an expansive landscape.
