Description
The Death of the Virgin gathers the apostles around Mary’s bed beneath a broad canopy, bringing prayer and companionship to a moment of farewell. A tall cross rises among the crowded figures, while the bed and its surrounding attendants fill the lower part of the room. The vaulted ceiling gives the gathering a dignified architectural setting without diminishing its intimate bedside character.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut tells the story through the different positions of heads, hands and bodies. Some figures lean toward Mary while others remain farther back, creating a shared concern that feels personal rather than ceremonial. Drapery, furniture and the enclosing architecture make the sacred episode tangible, inviting attention to the quiet work of those who keep watch around the bed.
