Description
The Deposition gathers mourners supporting Christ’s body above a stone tomb beneath a large tree. One man stands close in the foreground while another cradles the upper body, and the women behind respond with gestures of grief. The coffin creates a firm horizontal edge across the lower scene, holding the figures together around the impending burial.
This engraving after Albrecht Dürer’s Small Passion design is possibly by Marcantonio Raimondi. It translates the episode into a closely worked network of lines, preserving the intimate arrangement of bodies and attentive hands. Drapery gathers around the tomb, while the background tree frames the mourners without distracting from them. The composition gives the act of laying Christ to rest a deeply human character, built from careful support and shared sorrow.
