Description
The Deposition gathers mourners and helpers around Christ’s body as it is laid within a stone tomb. One man holds the upper body while another stands beside the open container, and the surrounding figures bend inward with grief and attention. A dark rocky opening and distant trees give the burial its secluded landscape setting.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Small Passion makes the final act of care its emotional center. The rigid stone edge contrasts with the vulnerable body, while the gathered faces and hands draw the viewer into the shared task. The scene moves beyond the violence of the preceding episodes, giving mourning a practical form in the careful support of those who remain.
