Description
The Deposition of Christ by Albrecht Dürer gathers mourners beneath a tall cross in a richly detailed landscape. Figures support and attend to the lowered body, while others stand close with faces and gestures turned toward it. Trees, distant buildings and uneven ground extend the scene beyond the immediate company without breaking its concentrated focus.
From The Large Passion, this woodcut is represented by an impression catalogued to 1511. Dürer balances the cross’s strong vertical with the more varied movements of the people below, making their shared care the image’s emotional center. The textured setting gives the episode a convincing place, while broad robes and expressive hands connect solemn sacred history with recognizable acts of tenderness and grief.
