Description

People gather around Christ’s pale laid-out body in Rembrandt’s Entombment, beneath a large arch developed through curved hatching. The illuminated lower forms bring the subject’s human presence forward within the enclosing space. The sacred event becomes a concentrated encounter between a lifeless body and those attending to it, giving practical care a considerable emotional weight.

Made around 1654, the etching includes drypoint. Rembrandt gives the subject a material form that can be considered through the printed mark rather than the distant grandeur of a monumental painting. The image’s interest lies in the relation between a lifeless body and the living people attending to it. A familiar narrative of loss acquires its presence through practical action, making the work an encounter with both remembrance and the human response to death.
