Description
The Entombment gathers mourners around Christ’s body beneath a rocky, tree-lined hillside. Figures bend, kneel and look downward, creating a close circle of attention around the dead man. Crosses remain visible in the distance, linking the gathering with the place of suffering, while the foreground brings grief close enough to register in individual faces and hands.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut makes shared mourning its central theme. The folds of the garments draw the figures together, and the twisting trees echo the scene’s emotional tension without distracting from the body. The contrast between the distant hill and the immediate group compresses the story into one view, holding the aftermath of death alongside the intimate care of those who remain.
