Description
The Exhortations by Francisco Goya draws the viewer into the enigmatic world of Disparates, also known as Follies or Irrationalities. The title suggests urgent appeals or admonitions, yet the series invites an emotional response that reaches beyond a single explanation. Persuasion, unease, and the uncertain workings of human behavior give the subject its lasting pull.
Created around 1815–19, the work was first published after Goya’s death in 1864, when the series appeared under the title Los Proverbios. It offers an absorbing encounter with the imaginative freedom of his later years. For those drawn to psychologically charged art, its open-ended character encourages a fresh response with each return.
