Description

Katsukawa Shunshō portrays Ichikawa Danjūrō V as an old man stooped over a staff. Gray hair and a dark outer robe define the upper figure, while pale legwear makes the crouched lower body distinct. The staff gives the posture a visible support, making assumed age something expressed through bodily effort as well as appearance.

Made around 1773, the print was produced in ink and color on paper. The portrait offers a reminder that stage images can preserve deliberate changes of appearance as well as recognizable likenesses. Danjūrō’s name anchors the figure to a particular theatrical career, while the old-man role asks an audience to accept another identity. Shunshō holds both in view, making performance a meeting between the known individual and the person imagined through him.
