Description
Nakamura Nakazō I portrays a komusō standing in snow beside a fence. His head is uncovered, and he extends a woven basket hat in one hand while holding a bamboo flute at his side. Patterned robes, snow-covered branches and the low fence establish the winter setting.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1775. Made with ink and color on paper, it carries the portrayed role beyond the immediate stage event into a lasting image. Its interest lies in the relationship between performer and setting, where a familiar social appearance is placed within a specific season while the actor remains the individual responsible for making it present.
