Description
Nakamura Nakazō I portrays a samurai before a fence, with broad red and green kamishimo shoulders spreading above the green ground. The formal garment gives the actor an angular, emphatic presence against the surrounding lines. Katsukawa Shunshō makes costume an active part of the character’s identity, while the named performer remains the person who inhabits the role.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1775. Ink and color on paper preserve the theatrical subject in a form that can be considered beyond the immediate performance. Its appeal comes from that double presence, where a particular actor remains within a character whose social position and appearance belong to the world of the drama.
