Description

Katsukawa Shunshō portrays Nakamura Nakazō I as Kan Shōjō in a seated pose beneath tall headwear. The elevated headdress counterbalances the low position of the body, giving the figure a distinctive vertical structure. This theatrical dignity belongs to the role being performed, while the actor’s name preserves the individual presence through which the character is made visible.

Dated 1780, the ink-and-color woodblock print belongs to the Edo period. Its lasting form gives the represented performance a different kind of time: the actor’s role can be encountered after the moment of theater has passed. Shunshō’s image therefore serves as both portrait and record of transformation. Rather than collapsing performer into character, it keeps the two connected, inviting the viewer to consider how theatrical identity is made visible.
