Description
Auguste Renoir’s The Fisherman places a man beside a shaded stream, his rod extending toward the water. A seated companion occupies the lower foreground, partly surrounded by vegetation. Warm clothing and skin tones emerge from the soft greens and browns of the bank.
The figures’ different poses give the scene an easy, unhurried rhythm. Renoir softens the boundary between people and landscape with loose strokes, while small flashes of light animate the water. The painting finds interest in the quiet occupation of a familiar outdoor place.
