Description
The Flagellation by Albrecht Dürer brings a violent episode into a shadowed interior. Christ stands bound near a column as men move around him with raised arms and twisting bodies. The confined space and overlapping figures make the scene feel close, while selected lighter passages draw attention to the exposed body and the actions around it.
Engraved in 1512 for The Passion, the image relies on sharply opposing gestures to convey its intensity. The column offers a firm vertical against the slanting movements of the tormentors, holding the crowded composition together. Dürer’s densely worked lines distinguish flesh, cloth and architecture, making the episode physically immediate while keeping the principal figure’s vulnerable stillness clear amid the surrounding force.
