Description
Mary rides a donkey through the darkness of Rembrandt’s Flight into Egypt, with Joseph walking low at the left near a small light. A dark arch of trees encloses the traveling company. The biblical journey becomes a close encounter with limited illumination, where a few visible forms allow human movement to remain present within a larger concealed world.
Made in 1651, the etching uses plate tone. The material presence of ink can contribute to the encounter as well as the engraved forms, giving the night scene a printed atmosphere distinct from a bright linear view. Rembrandt makes the journey intimate through its conditions, allowing the setting to share in the narrative’s human interest. The image’s appeal lies in that meeting of movement and darkness, where a modest traveling company inhabits a larger, partly concealed world.
