Description
The Four Philosophers gathers Justus Lipsius, Hugo Grotius, Peter Paul Rubens and Philip Rubens around a table of books. Turned heads, attentive gestures and the surrounding architecture create the feeling of a learned conversation held in suspension.
This eighteenth-century etching and engraving follows Rubens and Ferdinando Gregori. The carefully worked lines translate the group’s rich clothing, thoughtful expressions and scholarly setting into an intimate tribute to friendship and intellectual life.
