Description

Matsumoto Kōshirō IV stands as an otokodate, a figure associated with the world of urban gallantry. A long striped robe gives the quiet standing figure a pronounced downward rhythm, with one sword lowered beside the body. The setting leaves the actor’s bearing clear, allowing composure to carry the character’s presence without the need for overt movement.

Made around 1779, the nishiki-e print uses ink and color on paper. Its theatrical identity matters: Kōshirō is performing the otokodate rather than being represented as one in everyday life. The work’s interest lies in that assumed character, where a recognizable persona is given a particular bodily form. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves the distinction between actor and role while allowing their meeting to become the source of the image’s directness and personality.
