Description
The Garden of Love brings standing and seated couples into the foreground of an elaborate garden. Dark dresses and softer gray washes give the figures different weights, while trees, a fountain and palace architecture extend the setting behind them. The close grouping makes courtship a shared social scene, with the figures appearing more immediately present than the larger architectural surroundings.
Made around 1633–35, this left-hand portion belongs to a drawing developed by Peter Paul Rubens and his workshop for a woodcut by Christoffel Jegher. Rubens supplied the initial chalk design, while a workshop assistant carried out much of the subsequent drawing. Pen, wash and touches of colored paint give the model its layered surface, preserving a collaborative work whose grouped figures were adapted for another medium.
