Description

In Jean-François Millet’s etching The Gleaners, three women bend toward the ground, gathering grain left after harvest. Haystacks and other workers appear in the distance behind their repeated gestures. The foreground figures give the broad field a close human scale, turning the small remnants on the earth into the focus of sustained effort and attention.

Printed in brown-black ink and published by Auguste Delâtre, The Gleaners is an etching rather than Millet’s famous oil painting of the same subject. The printed lines give the workers a distinct material presence, allowing posture and surrounding space to carry the image. Millet finds significance in an occupation conducted close to the earth, where attention must repeatedly return to what can be gathered. The scene holds effort and landscape together without needing a grand event to establish their importance.
