Description
The Great Column’s upper section combines an elaborate architectural capital with a horned figure seated above it. The figure raises both hands to hold hanging ornaments, while curling forms, leaves and masks enrich the structure below. Its upright arrangement joins a clear supporting column with a lively, almost theatrical invention at the summit.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut makes ornament feel animated rather than merely decorative. The figure’s muscular body contrasts with the symmetrical scrolls of the capital, and the suspended objects extend the design down both sides. Seen as the upper part of a larger column, the image reveals how imaginative detail can transform architecture into a place for unexpected characters and expressive visual play.
