Description
Amedeo Modigliani’s The Great Nude (Le Grand Nu) presents a reclining figure in a broad, flowing arrangement of warm color. The body stretches across the canvas, with raised arms framing the head and a pale cushion setting off the dark hair. Rich reds and browns surround the softly modeled figure, giving the composition both depth and intimacy.
Also known as Reclining Nude, this work dates from about 1919. Modigliani reduces the setting to a few substantial shapes so that the body’s long curves carry the composition. Firm outlines and restrained detail give the figure a sculptural clarity, while the relaxed pose brings a quiet stillness to the scene.
