Description
In The “Kearsarge” at Boulogne, Manet spreads a busy field of boats across blue-green water, with the larger ship rising beyond the lighter craft. The high horizon lets the sea occupy much of the scene.
Quick marks of white suggest sails, spray and reflected light. Dark hulls punctuate the restless surface, creating a lively balance between the weight of the vessels and the movement of the water. The work is by Édouard Manet.
