Description
The Last Judgment expands into a vast gathering of souls, angels and monstrous forms. Above the tumult, Christ sits amid clouds; below, small figures crowd the earthly and infernal spaces, with dark creatures consuming or enclosing bodies. Pieter van der Heyden engraved this design after Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1558, and Hieronymus Cock published it. The composition gives the final reckoning a scale far beyond any individual participant.
Changes in size and density guide the eye between the upper vision and the unsettled lower world. Trumpeting angels establish the event’s solemn authority, while the surrounding inventions make its consequences frighteningly concrete. The engraving’s exact line keeps the multitude legible even as the scene becomes overwhelming. Order and terror coexist: the heavenly center appears fixed, while the world beneath it dissolves into an intricate drama of exposure and judgment.
