Description
The Last Supper by Albrecht Dürer fills a vaulted room with an animated gathering of Christ and the apostles. The table occupies the center, surrounded by figures whose gestures and turning heads suggest a charged exchange. Strong arches rise behind them, while vessels and cloth in the foreground make the occasion feel tangible and close.
In this woodcut from The Large Passion, the architecture provides a firm enclosure for the many human responses within it. Dürer contrasts the table’s steady horizontal with the shifting directions of hands, faces and folded robes. The resulting scene feels both ceremonial and intimate, giving a familiar episode renewed interest through the variety of the companions and the richly structured space they share.
