Description
The Man of Sorrows by Albrecht Dürer places Christ beside a tall column, his head lowered and his body turned inward. The crown of thorns and the posture make the devotional subject clear, while a small gathering of faces appears near the lower edge. The architectural shelter frames the figure without giving the scene the bustle of a full narrative episode.
Engraved in 1509 for The Passion, this image gains force from the closeness of the body and the contrast between stillness and dense shadow. Fine lines model the skin, drapery and hard surface of the column with remarkable precision. Dürer concentrates attention on an individual presence, creating a scene of suffering whose restraint makes the encounter feel especially intimate.
