Description
The Mass of Saint Gregory shows Gregory kneeling before a sacred vision, while attendants and objects associated with Christ’s suffering gather around the scene. The lower figures anchor the event in a tangible ceremonial setting, and the crowded upper space gives the revelation an expansive presence. The Mass of Saint Gregory brings the act of devotion into direct contact with the Passion’s remembered suffering.
Dated 1511, this woodcut uses strong changes of light and dark to connect the kneeling witness with the vision before him. Gestures, fabric and architectural details give the supernatural encounter a convincing material setting. The composition asks the eye to move between the observer and what he sees, making belief an active relationship within the image. Its richness comes from that joining of intimate response and a larger sacred drama.
