Description
The Mountain Ford follows a river through a green, wooded landscape, with rocks marking the nearer bank and a steep peak rising beyond. A tiny rider and pale horse cross farther back near the center, giving the surrounding terrain a sense of scale. Thomas Cole allows their passage to remain small within the larger view, making the river both a landscape feature and a route through it.
Painted in 1846 in oil on canvas, the work treats travel as part of the view rather than as an event detached from it. Its subject invites attention to changes of ground, water and distance, with the crossing marking the place where those different elements meet. The landscape can be followed both as a broad arrangement of forms and as a setting that determines how its smaller figures move through it.
