Description
The Nativity takes place within an extensive structure of broken masonry and timber, with the Holy Family sheltered in its lower corner. Nearby, a man works beside a well, while the damaged walls open toward a view beyond. The many beams, stairs and openings make the surrounding building as visually engaging as the small sacred gathering.
This reversed engraving after Albrecht Dürer’s design brings the Nativity into a world of ordinary materials and daily activity. Closely described stone, thatch and wood give the setting depth, while the figures remain modestly scaled within it. The contrast between a humble resting place and the elaborate surrounding structure gives the scene a distinctive quietness. Its appeal grows through close looking, as architectural details continually lead attention back to the sheltered family.
