Description

Ichimura Uzaemon IX appears as a samurai warrior in an emphatic pose, surrounded by a restless arrangement of color and jagged forms. The figure’s elaborate costume and energetic bearing give the narrow composition a strong theatrical charge. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the performer stand out through contrasting tones, allowing the angled limbs and surrounding shapes to reinforce the sense of action.

Created around 1773, this color woodblock print presents a warrior role through the heightened language of performance. Rather than the calm stance of an ordinary portrait, the image depends on expressive movement and the visual force of costume. Shunshō organizes these elements so that the figure remains clear within a busy setting. Its appeal lies in that balance, where decorative richness and bodily energy strengthen a single dramatic presence.
