Description

The Parable of the Good Shepherd surrounds a modest building with an extraordinary concentration of movement. Figures and animals crowd its roof and the surrounding ground, while a cloaked figure carrying an animal stands near the doorway. Philips Galle engraved the design after Pieter Bruegel the Elder; the museum dates it to 1565. The biblical subject gives this busy rural setting a question of care and responsibility.

Rather than isolating a single emblem, the composition builds its meaning through contrasting actions around the shelter. The caption below helps frame the crowded image as a lesson, but the visual story remains full of small incidents to examine. Fine engraved lines distinguish the structure, terrain and many moving bodies. Protection and danger occupy the same space, making the shepherd’s task feel part of a larger world of competing intentions.
