Description
The Penance of Saint John Chrysostom by Albrecht Dürer places a seated woman and child before a rugged landscape. Their close forms occupy the foreground beneath a rocky height, while a much smaller figure appears farther away. The contrast in scale creates a striking division between intimate human presence and the wider world of the scene.
Engraved around 1496, the work is compelling for the calm beauty of its foreground and the more remote narrative suggested beyond it. Fine lines distinguish skin, hair and rough stone, making the figures feel close without losing the landscape’s depth. Dürer lets the image hold its mystery, balancing maternal tenderness with a setting whose distant details invite a slower and more searching look.
