Description
The Penitent shows a kneeling man at prayer before a curtained altar. His lightly clothed body and clasped hands stand out against the dark interior, while a book and vessels on the altar suggest a place set aside for devotion. The surrounding walls give the figure a secluded space, free from the crowds and movement of a larger narrative.
Albrecht Dürer’s 1510 woodcut builds its feeling through posture and restraint. The bent knees and lowered head turn the body inward, while the curtain forms a soft vertical boundary beside the altar. The close arrangement makes penitence an intimate action rather than a public display, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the tension between physical exposure and spiritual withdrawal.
